Hizakisana, hinikarawina. Masja Mani hingairena. Greetings friends and relatives. My name is Willy Bass. My ceremonial name given to me by my grandfather is Masja Mani, which means Walks Hard. I am a member of the Bear Clan of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. I’m an aspiring educator to the Indian community, studying to be an elementary teacher with intentions of teaching at the collegiate level as well. I am currently a student at Salish Kootenai College, majoring in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Indian Education. I have also served as President of the Student Senate @ SKC and am serving on the American Indian Higher Education Consortium Student Congress. I am also a graduate of Little Priest Tribal College in Winnebago, Nebraska.
For my community in Nebraska, one of the visions I’ve had and maintained is the development of a program that acts as a support system for students transitioning from high school to college. The closest thing we have to such a program now is our own community college recruitment team, which guides the students to a certain extent. I envision a program that focuses particularly on that group of students for the betterment of Tribal Higher Education within my community.
